Forest School

Alongside the development of Mike’s Meadow, our outdoor learning environment, Batheaston Primary School has established a Forest School programme thatinvolves all classes from Reception to Year 6 across the school year. Sessions are led by experienced Forest School leader, Julia Butler, and include all children, their teachers, teaching assistants and volunteer parent helpers. Now in its seventh year, the focus of this long-term inclusive programme is to embed learning outdoors within the everyday experience of all the teaching staff and children and to link learning inside and outside the classroom.

'As soon as the first few sessions of Forest School had started at Batheaston, it was really clear to us all that the children were engaged, excited and developing many skills together. The creativity and quality of the children's planning, problem solving and communication was inspiring.'(Head Teacher, Sarah Weber)

'Having helped with Forest School for sometime now, I realise that my original concept of it was way too simplistic. I have watched children make up stories and then act them out, create a whole world, build shelters, make money to buy and sell things they have made. Their games have involved maths, English, PE, art and design and many other subjects that could be taught in a classroom ... they have no idea that they are learning so much. The transformation and progression of their ideas through out the term is amazing and an absolute joy to watch.' (Parent Volunteer)
